Jin Sei Ryu Karate-Do as a Third Space

January 27, 2026|by Jin Sei Ryu

This week, one of our young adult students made an observation that genuinely made me pause.

They said: “Jin Sei Ryū Karate-Dō feels like a third space for me.”

I’ll be honest, I hadn’t heard the term third space before, so I did a bit of reading.

A third space is described as a place that is neither home nor work (or school). It’s a place people choose to be: where they can slow down, feel grounded, not be judged, and not perform for the world.

As I reflected, it became clear that this is exactly the environment that we’ve built across our Jin Sei Ryū Karate-Dō dojos around the world.

This hasn’t been an accident. Nor has it been a superficial endeavour.

We’ve deliberately and carefully defined our vision, mission, and values with kindness, care, and structure. We also don’t hide behind mysterious or ancient codewords. Clarity and humanity matter to us.

In the dojo, you’re not defined by your job, age, status, or beliefs. You’re held to standards, but supported as a human being.

In a world where third spaces are disappearing, the dojo becomes something truly special. Sometimes the most important thing a dojo offers isn’t the strength or technique it holds within, but the safe and welcoming space it creates for a wide variety of students.
