Mindfulness vs Mindlessness

Mindfulness is often misunderstood as slowness or restraint. In truth, it is about clarity and consequence: acting with awareness of the moment, and with care for what that moment sets in motion.

People often say, “Don’t take shortcuts.”

This is only partially true.

Most of the time, in martial arts, they are referring to techniques taught or belts progressed. But the deeper concern is not technical speed; it is whether the essential elements of mindset, growth, and intentional development are being preserved in the learning process.

In Jin Sei Ryū, we begin teaching this intentionality from the very beginning of a student’s journey – even in our children’s classes. Yet understanding it is only the first step. It often takes years for students to truly apply these principles to their training, and longer still to carry them beyond the dojo into their work, relationships, and other disciplines.

Shortcuts become a problem only when they bypass what truly matters: the cultivation of character, awareness, discipline, and individual traits that cannot be rushed or substituted. Even well-intended effort can feel hollow when action is separated from reflection.

In budo terms, technique requires more than motion. It requires “kamae” (balance and readiness) and “zanshin” (awareness that extends beyond the action itself). Without these, movement may look effective, but it lacks grounding.

Many of the most important lessons are not taught explicitly. They are implied, absorbed through observation, by watching instructors, seniors, and fellow students. In other words, they are learned within our community.

What defines mindful action is not urgency, but presence. Not volume, but intention. Not reaction, but foresight.

To be mindful of these subtleties is to access the true depth of teaching, not just what is shown, but what is modelled; not just what is achieved, but how it is achieved.
